Director of Photography Gabe DeCarlo reviews his favorite show he’s discovered during quarantine: Disney Gallery.
I, like most of you, have watched way too much TV lately. Whether watching Netflix, Hulu, or others, we all eventually realize there are too many choices and you don’t want to commit to the wrong show (even in lockdown). So, if you’re a fan of The Mandalorian, or really Star Wars at all, there is a series you need to check out.
While the name leaves much to be desired, one of the newest Disney+ shows Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, will only leave you with more than you hoped for. Jon Favreau (Avengers, Swingers, Iron Man) is the executive producer of Disney’s newest Star Wars series The Mandalorian and acts as the host of Gallery. While the show has released only a couple of episodes, Favreau’s take on this behind-the-scenes series is unlike any recap show I have ever seen.
The title of each episode is a simple one-word topic: “Directing”, “Legacy”, “Cast” “Technology”, “Practical”, “Visualization”, “Score”, “Connections.” But they contain far from simple discussions. With Directors like Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World), Deborah Chow (Better Call Saul), Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars series and film), & Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Favreau deep dives into traditional story telling rather than dwell on the fact the show is, at its core, a space western starring a wide variety of aliens. Because of this very simple and personal approach to the topics, I quickly forgot that I was a “professional” who may have approached it for its informative qualities and really began to appreciate the care and reverence used in making the first live action Star Wars tv series.
As a lifetime fan of the Star Wars franchise myself, I quickly realized that respect for filmmaking as a craft and the significance of Star Wars are the foundation of everything new we are seeing. It makes the future of Star Wars under Disney’s care far more exciting and a bit less scary. So if you’re wondering if I just accidentally “waxed poetic” about a new Disney show, the answer is yes. But, should you take the next available evening you have to watch it? Also… yes.
